Being Graceful to Enemy
The following is a narrative from the epic Ramayana.
Lord Rama killed Ravana in the battle field. Ravana’s brother Vibishana was reluctant to perform the last ceremonial rites of his brother. According to him, Ravana’s body was not worthy of a graceful cremation.
Rama disagreed with Vibishana’s views. Rama said “Now that he is dead, he is not our enemy and deserves a proper sanskara”.
In Valmiki Ramayana – Yuddha Canto – 99.39, Rama extols the virtue of being graceful, even to an enemy.
மரணாந்தானி வைராணி நிர்வ்ருத்தம் ந꞉ ப்ரயோஜனம்
க்ரியதாமஸ்ய ஸம்ஸ்காரோ மமாப்யேஷ யதா² தவ
maranaan-taani vairaani nirvruttam nah prayojanam |
kriya-taamasya samskaaro mamaa-pyesha yathaa tava ||
Meaning: Enmity ends with death; it is of no use to desist from performing his last rites; He’s (now) mine (my brother) as is yours.
Thiruvalluvar in his couplet 998 also extols the same virtue
நண்பாற்றார் ஆகி நயமில செய்வார்க்கும்
பண்பாற்றார் ஆதல் கடை
Nanbaat-raar aagi nayamila seivaarkkum
Panbaat-raar aadal kadai
It will be considered as a blemish on the part of a learned person, if he is not courteous and civilized even with those who are not friendly or behave like enemies .
பரிமேலழகர் உரை:
நண்பு ஆற்றாராகி நயம் இல செய்வார்க்கும் – தம்மொடு நட்பினைச் செய்யாது பகைமையைச் செய்தொழுவார் மாட்டும்; பண்பு ஆற்றாராதல் கடை – தாம் பண்புடையராய் ஒழுகாமை அறிவு உடையார்க்கு இழுக்காம். (நயம் – ஈரம். சிறப்பு உம்மை அவர் பண்பாற்றாமைக் கிடனாதல் தோன்ற நின்றது. அதனைச் செய்யின், தாமும் அவர் தன்மையராவர் என்பார், ‘கடை’ என்றார்.).

வினா மைத்ரீம் விரோத⁴ம் ச குர்வதாம் விஷயே(அ)பி ய: |
