Pride of Warrior
In the epic Ramayana, Lord Rama and Ravana fought a hard battle. During the first day’s battle, Lord Rama’s arrow, reduced Ravana’s crown to pieces. He also pinned Ravana down with arrows. Ravana was totally incapacitated to continue the battle with Rama. Rama could have killed Ravana instantly. However, Rama told Ravana that he is against killing an unarmed warrior and he was sparing him for the day out of mercy. Rama also made an offer of peace to Ravana and told him that, he would forgive him, if he released his wife Sita and made his brother Vibishana as the King of Lanka. Alternatively, if he was not willing to accept the offer, and still chose to fight him, Lord Rama asked him to resume the next day and warned him, that he would show no mercy, next time.
Thiruvalluvar in his Couplet 773 states that it is a superior degree of valour and magnanimity on the part of a warrior to spare an enemy in distress, out of compassion and mercy.
பேராண்மை என்ப தறுகண்ஒன்று உற்றக்கால்
ஊராண்மை மற்றுஅதன் எஃகு

பரிமேலழகர் உரை:
தறுகண் பேராண்மை என்ப – பகைவர்மேற் கண்ணோடாது செய்யும் மறத்தை நூலோர் மிக்க ஆண்தன்மையென்று சொல்லுவர்; ஒன்று உற்றக்கால் ஊராண்மை அதன் எஃகு – அவர்க்கு ஒரு தாழ்வு வந்ததாயின், கண்ணோடி அது தீர்த்துக்கோடற் பொருட்டு ஊராண்மை செய்தலை நூலோர் அதற்குக் கூர்மை என்று சொல்லுவர். (‘என்ப’ என்பது பின்னும் இயைந்தது. ஊராண்மை – உபகாரியாம்தன்மை, அஃதாவது, இலங்கையர் வேந்தன் போரிடைத் தன் தானை முழுதும்படத் தமினாய் அகப்பட்டானது நிலைமை நோக்கி அயோத்தியர் இறை மேற்செல்லாது, ‘இன்று போய் நாளை நின்தானையோடு வா,’ என விட்டாற்போல்வது. இவை இரண்டு பாட்டும் தழிஞ்சி (பு.வெ.மா.வஞ்சி 3).
