Reasoning with Fools
The world is full of people with diverse backgrounds and experiences and a consensus of opinion, is impossible to achieve.
Intelligent debate with sensible people is always welcome as it can expand one’s mind and challenge conventional thinking. Sensible people prefer to engage others with divergent views, in a debate, and win them over with superior argument and expose the hollowness of their logic. But, in most of the cases, they end up banging their head against a wall. The reason for such outcome is not hard to foresee. People with erroneous and fallacious thinking, devoid of a connection to reality, belligerently try to justify and validate their logic. Such people of miniscule knowledge and misguided intelligence are unable to mount a rational argument supporting their viewpoint and odiously cling to their bogus suppositions and faulty claims.
A wise man once said, “Don’t argue with a fool for too long, because after a while, no-one can tell the difference between you and him.”
Thiruvalluvar in his couplet 849 says that “It is impossible to teach a fool who assumes that he knows everything and there is nothing more to be learnt from anyone. Due to such an adamant attitude of refusing to see beyond his nose, it will be futile for a learned person to reason it out with him. Such a learned person will just end up, being called ignorant and not capable of knowing anything, by that foolish person.”
காணாதான் காட்டுவான் தான்காணான் காணாதான்
கண்டானாம் தான்கண்ட வாறு
Kaanaa-dhaan kaattu-vaan thaan-kaanaan kaanaa-dhaan
Kandaanaam thaan-kanda vaaru
பரிமேலழகர் உரை:
காணாதாற் காட்டுவான் தான் காணான் – தன்னை எல்லாம் அறிந்தானாக மதித்தலான் பிறரால் ஒன்றறியும் தன்மையிலாதானை அறிவிக்கப்புகுவான் அவனாற் பழிக்கப்பட்டுத்தான் அறியானாய் முடியும்: காணாதான் தான் கண்டவாறு கண்டானாம் – இனி அவ்வறியுந் தன்மையில்லாதான் கொண்டது விடாமையான் தான் அறிந்தவாற்றால் அதனை அறிந்தானாய் முடியும்; (புல்லறிவாளர்க்கு நல்லறிவு கொள்ளுதல் ஒருவாற்றானும் இயைவதன்று என்பதாம்.).
சாலமன் பாப்பையா உரை:
அறிவற்றவனுக்கு அறிவு காட்ட முயல்பவன் அறிவற்றவனால் அறிவற்றவனாய் எண்ணப்படுவான்; அறிவற்றவன் தான் அறிந்ததே அறிவாக எண்ணுவான்.
