Conviction in Thoughts
The following is an event from the life of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.
In his early childhood days, Dr. Kalam was fascinated by the mysteries of the sky and the flight of birds. He used to watch cranes and seagulls soar into flight and longed to fly. He was convinced that one day he, too, would soar up into the skies.
One day, in his college campus, he saw two decommissioned aircraft displayed there for the demonstration of the various subsystems of flying machines. He felt a strange attraction towards them, and would sit near them long after other students had gone back to the hostel. He would admire man’s will to fly free in the sky, like a bird.
His professor observed this and enquired Dr Kalam about the reason for his fascination. When Dr. Kalam shared his childhood dream with his College Professor, he advised him that:
“To succeed in life and achieve results, one must understand and master three mighty forces:
- desire,
- belief, and
- expectation.”
His professor, told him that, one had to desire a thought, intensely and be absolutely certain it would happen before wanting that thing to happen.
It is history that, Dr. Kalam went on to become the architect of Indian Missile System.
Dr. Kalam said that, he was inspired by Thirukkural Couplet No. 661 in nurturing his vision.

மற்றைய எல்லாம் பிற

வினைத் திட்பம் என்பது ஒருவன் மனத்திட்பம் – வினைசெய்தற்கண் திண்மை என்று சொல்லப்படுவது அதனை முடித்தற்குரியானொருவன் மனத்தினது திண்மை; மற்றைய எல்லாம் பிற – அஃது ஒழிந்தன எல்லாம் அதற்குத் திண்மை என்று சொல்லப்படா. (ஒழிந்தனவாவன: படை, அரண், நட்பு முதலியவற்றின் திண்மைகள். அவையும் அதற்கு வேண்டுவனவாய் இனமாகலின், ‘மற்றைய’ என்றும், வேண்டினும் அஃது இல்வழிப் பயனிலவாகலின் ‘பிற’ என்றும் கூறினார். இதனால் வினைத் திட்பமாவது இன்னது என்பது கூறப்பட்டது.).
