Perseverance
The following is an extract of a speech by His Holiness Kanchi Mahaswamigal.
“I am doing my level best to propagate Dharma. I am constantly devising plans and programs to implement them. The goal is quite distant.
In fact, it is moving at a pace, faster, than my efforts.
But, I cannot get tired and give up on my efforts.
Neither can I reconcile to the current situation saying that ‘the deterioration in Values and Culture are irreversible’.
The culture and values that we have inherited have been preserved and handed down to us by generations, overcoming threats and sabotages. There cannot be a greater failure on our part, if we abandon them.
As said in our Scriptures, I should keep persevering with my efforts, leaving the outcomes to destiny.
My strong conviction about Dharma, sincerity in my prayers and perseverance in effort are some of the major factors which can influence the outcomes.
In case, the results have not fructified yet, I would only interpret that, my conviction, sincerity and perseverance have not been good enough. I have to commit myself more and improve my efforts.”
Saint Thiruvalluvar reiterates the above in the Thirukkural Couplet 619. Despite the best efforts, a person may not be destined to be successful as expected but his sincere efforts are bound to compensate him with benefits proportionate to his efforts.
தெய்வத்தான் ஆகாது எனினும் முயற்சிதன்
மெய்வருத்தக் கூலி தரும்
Deivath-thaan Aagaathu eninum Muyarchi-than
Mey-varuththak Kooli Tharum
பரிமேலழகர் உரை:
தெய்வத்தான் ஆகாது எனினும் – முயன்ற வினை பால்வகையால் கருதிய பயனைத் தாராதாயினும்; முயற்சி தன் மெய் வருத்தக் கூலி தரும் – முயற்சி தனக்கு இடமாய உடம்பு வருந்திய வருத்தத்தின் கூலிஅளவு தரும்; பாழாகாது. (தெய்வத்தான் ஆயவழித் தன் அளவின் மிக்க பயனைத் தரும் என்பது உம்மையால் பெற்றாம். இருவழியும் பாழாகல் இன்மையின், தெய்வம் நோக்கியிராது முயல்க என்பது கருத்து.).

விதௌ⁴ தே ப்ரதிகூலே(அ)பி மா யத்னம் த்யஜ ஸர்வதா³ |
